Sometimes Good News Comes in Bunches

After facing a series of challenges, the Bunch family was once again confronted with a financial hurdle when their guinea pig Rebecca was diagnosed with a tumor. Support from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo helped them proceed with surgery at the NC State Veterinary Hospital — where Rebecca was given a clean bill of health.

SECU Foundation Offers New Internships for NC State Students

Through funding from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation, NC State students will be serving rural communities in North Carolina while gaining valuable career experience this summer. The new SECU Public Fellows Internship Program provides up to $50,000 to fund 10 existing internships in 2020. In partnership with NC State’s Rural Works! program, SECU Public Fellows will receive professional development training and career readiness coaching.

Dr. Monique Colclough is a postdoctoral scholar researching the best ways to support students who have autism, as institutions rethink how student success is defined and measured. She finds that her work is a natural fit with the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, established at NC State's College of Education with a $10.86 million grant from the John M. Belk Endowment.

College of Education Celebrates Grand Opening of Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research

On Dec. 3, the College of Education held an opening reception for its Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, the result of a $10.86 million grant from the John M. Belk Endowment in 2018. With the launch of the center, the College of Education has expanded its ability to support community colleges in three ways: furthering the preparation of future community college presidents, providing ongoing leadership development to community college executives and trustees, and building capacity for evidence-based decision-making and applied research.

Helping Kayda Return to the Force

Cpl. Eric Peterson and his black lab Kayda make up the two-member Surf City canine patrol. Support from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund is helping keep these partners together. After being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, compassionate care had Kayda back by Peterson's side in a matter of weeks.

NC GlaxoSmithKline Grant to Support C3 Program

NC State announced a $1,064,000 investment from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to expand its Community College Collaboration (C3) project, which guarantees admission to the university to qualified transfer students from several of the state's community colleges. The grant will allow expansion of the program to 150 new students per year from its current level of 120 students per year. It also will increase the number of eligible community college partners from eight to 10.

Partner Profile: The Golden LEAF Foundation

The Sept. 6 groundbreaking for the NC State University Plant Sciences Building, a 185,000-square-foot research facility that will stand in the heart of Centennial Campus, was a milestone. Among the guest speakers at the ceremony was Randy Isenhower, board chairman of the Golden LEAF Foundation, which has awarded NC State $48 million in combined grants for the Plant Sciences Initiative. That funding included the largest single contribution ever made to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
