An Unforgettable Experience

Cathy Mittenson soon will be working as a large animal associate veterinarian, following her spring graduation from NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Mittenson benefited from the Equine Memorial Scholarship, part of the Equine Memorial Program Fund launched in 2015 by Southern Pines Equine Associates veterinarians James Hamilton and Thomas Daniel Jr. in coordination with the NC Veterinary Medical Foundation. The program is funded by participating veterinarians who donate in memory of horses in their care.

Bearded Dragon Offers Insight Into Cancer Treatment

A 6-year-old lizard named Citrus is treated for sarcoma, thanks to a Petco Foundation grant to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine that helps defray the cost of treating cancer in exotic animals like birds, reptiles and small mammals. Pet owners often decide not to treat an exotic animal because of the expense — which means owners lose pets sooner and veterinary medicine loses valuable opportunities to gain insight into effective treatment.

A Distinguished Professorship for an Extraordinary Scientist

Ed Breitschwerdt, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases who came to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982, has influenced many students to step through the college’s doors and then out into the veterinary profession. He also has trained many members of the CVM family — residents, interns, now-colleagues — who have gone on to become endowed professors. On April 3, he became one himself when he received the Melanie S. Steele Distinguished Professorship in Medicine.

A Study in Gratitude

Bella the Labrador retriever and her owner, Valerie Maitre of Wilmington, are thankful for the Petco Foundation's three-year grant to the NC State Veterinary Hospital. The funding established a program to help defray the cost of cancer treatment for small companion animals like cats and dogs, making advanced cancer care more accessible to pet owners and increasing opportunities for veterinarians to learn more from their clinical experiences.
