Grateful Clients Award Anesthesia Team Coat of Excellence

When Winston, an 11-year-old Airedale, went into cardiac arrest during a CT scan, Lysa Posner, professor of anesthesiology at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, took charge. Winston's owners, Crystal and David Steffan, have recognized Posner's extraordinary efforts with a Coat of Excellence gift -- and the 22 members of the anesthesiology team have matching blue shirts with the inscription, "Winston’s Team Anesthesia."

Aid for Aging Pets

Dr. Kady Gjessing is dedicated to treating aging pets with dignity. The 1994 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine -- and a generous donor who established the endowed Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rahna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology at CVM -- was among 17 NC State alumni honored with College Distinguished Alumni Awards at the annual Evening of the Stars Gala on Nov. 1.

After Highway Fall, an Extraordinary Recovery

When Pamela Johnson's horse Colby suffered a fall last spring, care from the team at the College of Veterinary Medicine ensured his full recovery. Johnson has expressed her gratitude in several ways, including donations supporting Lauren Schnabel’s research, the equine orthopedic service and the Gallop of Honor program.

The Extra Mile: Mathews Honored for Extraordinary Care

Todd and Carla Baker recently presented Kyle Mathews, professor of soft tissue and oncologic surgery, with a Coat of Excellence for going the extra mile in his treatment of their English bulldog, Chancho. The Bakers' gift to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation honors extraordinary veterinarians, but also helps fund the extraordinary care animals receive every day at NC State.

An Unforgettable Lesson in Humanity

Alexandru Pop was eagerly awaiting an externship at an animal hospital near the North Carolina coast when Hurricane Florence struck. As he helped with relief efforts for animals impacted by the storm, Pop developed a broader view of the power of veterinary medicine. CVM's Disaster Relief Fund will continue to help animals that have been rescued and sheltered.
