Remembering Tom Banks

H. Thomas Banks, Distinguished University Professor, LeRoy B. Martin Jr. Distinguished Professor and associate director of the Center for Research in Scientific Computation, passed away at the age of 79 on Dec. 31. In addition to his exceptional scientific achievements, including over 550 peer-reviewed publications, a hallmark of Banks' intellectual efforts during his career was the education and training of young mathematicians and scientists. Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders in Statistics

As part of efforts to inspire students and develop the next generation of women leaders in statistics, department head Len Stefanski has been using funds from his R.A. Fisher Distinguished Professorship endowment to send a group of women students to the annual Women in Statistics and Data Science (WSDS) conference for each of the past four years. This year, Eric Laber also funded a student’s attendance through his Goodnight Distinguished Professorship.
