Paper Science Alumnus Establishes Scholarship to Honor Mother

Ed Melton, Pulp and Paper Science and Technology class of 1977, has long wanted to find a way to thank his mother for working so hard to ensure that he got an education. So, Melton and his wife, Judy, have endowed the Frances Melton Scholarship for students majoring in paper science and engineering.

New Karla A. Henderson Distinguished Professor Named

The College of Natural Resources is pleased to announce that Corey Johnson has been selected as the new Karla A. Henderson Distinguished Professor, the first funded distinguished professorship in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.

Steve Kelley, the Reuben B. Robertson Professor in the College of Natural Resources’ Department of Forest Biomaterials, recently partnered with the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory to examine the financial and environmental benefits — and costs — of using cross-laminated timber in tall wood buildings.

NC State Project Promotes STEM Education at Dillard Drive Elementary

NC State professor Bethany Cutts recently led her students from the NR 203: Humans and Environment course in mentoring more than 100 second graders in learning about pollination, plants and ecosystems, and garden planting and maintenance. Funded through a grant from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion that was made possible by annual donors to the College of Natural Resources and from challenges won by the college on Day of Giving, the project aimed to provide Cutts’ students with an opportunity to interact with and mentor a diverse community partner and to provide opportunities for elementary students who do not typically have access to STEM programs.

New CNR Program Aims to Grow Tomorrow’s Leaders

The College of Natural Resources’ new James Buzzard Leadership Development Program is expected to launch in the spring of 2023. The year-long program was established through a gift by the late James “Jim” Buzzard, a 1976 pulp and paper technology alumnus, and targets upper-level undergraduates who are within three semesters of graduation with cumulative leadership experiences such as the CNR Student Ambassadors, Shelton Leadership, Sustainability Steward or similar programs.

Erin Seekamp Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Coastal Resilience and Sustainability

Dr. Erin Seekamp, a professor of parks, recreation and tourism management and an extension tourism specialist in the College of Natural Resources, has been appointed Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Coastal Resilience and Sustainability, as well as director of the Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative. The appointment is effective August 16.

Mann Family Establishes Wildlife Conservation Scholarship

Abigail Johnson, a graduate of Avery County High School in Newland, N.C., is the first recipient of the Carroll and Dawn Mann Wildlife Conservation Scholarship. Mrs. Mann said the scholarship was intended to take effect upon her death, “but I just couldn’t wait! I wanted to do some good with it now, to honor the memory of my husband, Carroll, and to get to know the recipient while I was still around.”

New Endowment Established to Honor Forestry Alumnus Bob Jordan

For the 1954 forestry graduate who went on to serve as a state senator, lieutenant governor, chairman of NC State’s Board of Trustees, and head of his beloved family’s lumber business, helping others is what it was all about. Now, his wife, Sarah Jordan, has honored his memory by establishing the Robert B. Jordan III Extraordinary Opportunity Scholarship Endowment for the College of Natural Resources, aided with gifts from immediate family members and Jordan Lumber.

NC State Students Host Exhibition to Celebrate W.E.B. Du Bois’ Visualization Work

NC State students recently celebrated the life and work of NAACP cofounder W.E.B. Du Bois at GIS Week, an event administered by the Geospatial Graduate Student Organization in partnership with the Center for Geospatial Analytics and NC State University Libraries. Funding for the awards and material costs of physical installations was provided by a $2,400 grant from NC State University Libraries and a $1,000 grant from a donor-funded program at the College of Natural Resources’ Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
