In Memoriam: Bob Jordan

Alumnus Bob Jordan, who served North Carolina as a public official and business leader, died earlier this month. Jordan is remembered for his unwavering support of NC State for more than 60 years. He was a member and chair of the university’s Board of Trustees, among other roles, and his service and philanthropy earned him two of NC State's top honors: the Watauga Medal, for service, and the Menscer Cup, for philanthropy.

Jeff Reese: A Life of Devotion, a Legacy of Impact

Jeff Reese, an esteemed alumnus and devoted volunteer of the College of Natural Resources, died Oct. 30. To honor his life, legacy and impact, friends, family and colleagues have joined together to establish the Jeff Reese IMPACT Award at NC State. The award will provide scholarships to undergraduates in paper science and engineering, with preference to students who participate in any instrumental ensemble at NC State, are in the university chapter of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry or serve as paper science and engineering ambassadors or mentors.

CNR Alumni Spotlight: Caroline Griffin

Caroline Griffin, 2017 alumna of NC State’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, didn’t always plan on getting a four-year degree. But after a conversation with her father, uncle and grandfather, she jumped into life at NC State as a transfer student, making the dean’s list, joining Rho Phi Lambda Honorary Society and receiving two scholarships.

Shockley Named the College of Natural Resources 2019 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

Terry W. Shockley '75 has been named the College of Natural Resources 2019 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in recognition of his esteemed military career and his commitment to supporting military-affiliated students at NC State. He and his wife, Vicki, established a planned gift to create the Terry Shockley Scholarship Endowment to provide need-based scholarship support to CNR undergraduates, with a preference for students in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs and veterans not already receiving scholarship or funding support.

Meentemeyer Named Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Geospatial Analytics

NC State’s College of Natural Resources announced that Ross K. Meentemeyer, director of the Center for Geospatial Analytics, has been appointed the Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Geospatial Analytics. Meentemeyer is a foundational member of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program’s geospatial analytics faculty cluster and a faculty member in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. The professorship was made possible by a gift from longtime university supporters Jim and Ann Goodnight.

New Fund Established to Promote Diversity in Forestry

Resource Management Service, one of the world’s leading managers of forest investments for institutional investors, will donate $20,000 to NC State’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources in the College of Natural Resources to establish the Forester of the Future Fund. Goals of the fund include helping attract and support undergraduate and graduate students from populations historically underrepresented in the forestry profession and the department.

Former NC State Professor Establishes Forest Biomaterials Lecture

Richard Thomas — an alumnus, former professor and department head in the College of Natural Resources — has generously donated $100,000 to establish an annual lecture in forest biomaterials. Expected to launch in 2021, the Dr. Richard J. and Margaret M. Thomas Endowed Lecture will highlight notable research from across the country or world.

Forestry Student Wins Resource Management Service Scholarship

Sarah Bailey, a College of Natural Resources senior studying forest management, is the recipient of a two-year scholarship from Resource Management Service, one of the world's leading managers of forest investments for institutional investors and the managers of a 50-year timber deed on NC State's Hofman Forest. The scholarship aims to promote forestry as a career path for student populations that have been historically underrepresented in the profession.
