Kathryn Council, an NC State alumna, volunteer and former staff member, received the 2017 Jerry and Elizabeth Godwin Red Torch Award on June 8 in recognition of her impact at the university.

Mapping Early Syrian Immigration

In collaboration with the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, a group of public history graduate students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences completed an innovative exploration of Syrian immigration to New York starting in the late 1800s.

Alumna Forges a Path for Others

The first recipient of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Rebecca and Ruth C. Leonard Scholarship, Sharita Whitaker graduated summa cum laude from NC State in 2007 before enrolling at NC Central University’s School of Law. Now a real estate attorney at one of the state’s largest firms, she chairs the North Carolina Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Committee.

Street Smarts and the Arts

Alabama Stone, who received the Robbie S. Knott Scholarship from the Department of English, and Tyree Davis, a Cave Canem fellow, have produced an anthology of poetry that resulted from workshops they led for homeless young people in Raleigh. Stone and Davis recently completed their MFA degrees at NC State's College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The students and alumni will teach or conduct research abroad for a year. Since the national program’s inception in 1946, 68 NC State students and alumni have received Fulbright grants, including 28 since 2012.

Building a Legacy

NC State University alumna Clare Jordan founded the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity more than 25 years ago. She now supports an endowment that will benefit students who are completing nonprofit internships.

Trying to Capture A Common Link

Laila Knio, a senior psychology major and a Park Scholar, has created a 45-minute documentary, The Common Link, that chronicles the tales of eight Lebanese people. The film's debut this month is presented ty the departments of English and film studies, the Honors Program and the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies.

At NC State’s Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, distinguished professors Dr. Akram Khater leads researchers in using census records and other data to preserve and share the clearest, most honest histories of Arab-Americans, particularly Lebanese-American immigrants.
