Illuminating Science

Hali Harwood, biochemistry major student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is the first recipient of the Harold Swaisgood Biochemistry Mentorship Fund. CALS alumni Mary and Mark Sliwkowski, both of whom have professional backgrounds in biochemistry, established the fund, which provides a generous stipend to students for 15 months of research.

Hardworking Heroine

NC State alumna Callie Lewis Bryan ’22 was the first recipient of the Jarvis Warren Family Animal Industry Scholarship Endowment, a full-ride scholarship named in honor of Dan Warren’s father. During her time at NC State, Lewis Bryan even had the opportunity to get to know Dan Warren, whose gift funded the scholarship.

Leaders Named to N.C. PSI Commercialization Council

The new council will inform the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative’s efforts to deliver to growers across North Carolina by helping provide access to transformational technologies and support tools. Stephen Markham, Goodnight Distinguished University Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the executive director of NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, is co-chair of the council.

Funding Boosts Agricultural Institute’s Career Readiness Programs

In 2021, the Golden LEAF Foundation provided the Agricultural Institute (AGI) with nearly $1 million to support new programs to increase student recruitment and enhance job readiness for agricultural management and the livestock sector. Through the foundation’s generous gift, AGI has applied the funding in four areas: an agricultural operations certificate, a food animal and poultry processing curriculum, student internships and a mentorship program. 

Eli Hornstein's startup company, Elysia Creative Biology, is producing bioengineered crops that can be turned into feed that reduces methane emission from cows.

The N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative’s Startup Program provides expertise and resources to help emerging companies bring problem-solving agricultural technologies to the marketplace, including through a newly established commercialization advisory council. William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professors Announced

Twelve professors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were recently named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professors. The professorship is one of the college’s highest honors, created by William Neal Reynolds in 1950 through an endowment to recognize outstanding scholars, leaders, teachers and mentors.
