Student Launches Composting Program in Campus Apartments

NC State student Kelsey Shevlin, a Caldwell Fellow and University Scholar, initiated a kitchen composting effort that has about 60 apartments in Wolf Village using compost jars. Residents fill the jars with food scraps including banana peels and apple cores, and empty them in a nearby outdoor composting dumpster. That material is transported to a composting facility for processing.

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Student of the Month: Olivia Zalecki

Olivia Zalecki, a Caldwell Fellow and a double major in Chinese and international politics, is the founder and president of Adopted Students Union at NC State. Zalecki, who has studied abroad in China and England, aspires to work in government in the area of international relations.

Lisbeth Arias recently realized a dream when she held a launch celebration for her clothing line, Descalza, at her alma mater, NC State’s College of Textiles. The Caldwell Fellow alumna started the line as an undergraduate and now is working to build her own business.

Honoring a Legacy

As the longtime director of NC State University’s Caldwell Fellows program, Gerald Hawkins seemed to take all of his students under his wing. Now, many Caldwell alumni are joining forces to bolster the program and honor the legacy of Hawkins — who retired more than a decade ago — by raising funds for his namesake endowment.
