Abby Johnson ’25 Turns Passion Into Purpose Through Scholarship Support

With support from the Carroll and Dawn Mann Wildlife Conservation Scholarship, Abby Johnson was able to complete her bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology last May. Learn more about this young alumna and how private support enabled her to learn, grow and succeed during her time on campus.

Faculty and Staff Earn Campus Safety Awards

NC State recently bestowed the inaugural David Rainer Memorial Campus Safety Award and other safety recognitions to 13 individuals and teams across campus. The award honors the memory of Rainer, a former associate vice chancellor, and is made possible by a donation from Henry Schaffer, a professor emeritus in the College of Sciences.

Generous Estate Gift From MSE Alum To Create Lasting Change in the Department

Paul Besser ’88 and his wife, Kathy, recently finalized a $2.5 million estate gift benefiting the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The gift will support student scholarships and establishes endowments for a professorship and for K-12 outreach.

Centennial Scholar Athalia Windham Uses Enrichment Funds to Study Abroad in Prague

Last spring, Athalia Windham, a junior majoring in textile engineering, used her Centennial Scholarship’s enrichment funds to support her study abroad experience in Prague. Windham’s unforgettable trip also opened the door to global learning.

Miller Fellows Share Their Growth and Grit

Before the 2025 Miller Fellowship came to a close last month, six NC State alumni entrepreneurs took time to reflect on their experience in the program. The fellowship was created by Tom Miller as the Entrepreneurship Initiative Fellows program in 2014, then endowed by a group of alumni and renamed the Dr. Thomas Kenan Miller III Fellows Program in 2017.

Life-Saving Innovations

R. Michael Roe, an NC State entomologist whose in-depth research on insect biology has led to innovative products that protect human health, was recently selected as a 2025 fellow in the National Academy of Inventors. Roe is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology and a faculty member with NC State’s toxicology program.
