Researchers Develop Framework for More Efficient Adoption of Medical Innovations

Significant amounts of time, money and energy go into developing new, effective diagnostic tests, but what happens when medical providers elect not to use them for reasons such as a perceived increase in their workload? It’s a question like this that led Alice M. Mitchell, MD, to approach a group of operational researchers including the Poole College of Management’s Sebastian Heese, department head and Owens Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management.

Hatching a Future

NC State was the only college Ebony Harris wanted to attend after graduating high school. Being the oldest of 13 children, Harris was a first-generation college student and was in the poultry science program from 2006 to 2010. Now an assistant manager at Perdue Farms Hatchery in Kenly, she’s appreciative of her time at NC State and the scholarships that helped carry some of the financial burden for her and her family.

Essential Work

Food and housing insecurity has risen among NC State students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the Pack Essentials program and the generous donors who have supported it, the university has been able to alleviate some of the financial and emotional stress for students facing financial hardship via Student Emergency Fund grants, meal plan scholarships, meal shares and resources from Feed the Pack food pantry.

Goodnight STEM Coaches Pay It Forward

The Goodnight Scholars program’s commitment to students from low- and middle-income families in North Carolina studying in STEM or STEM education extends directly into the public school system. One way this happens is through the STEM coaching initiative, in which scholars introduce K-8 students to STEM concepts they may not experience otherwise.

NC State Veterinary Medicine Infectious Disease Expert Birkenheuer to Receive Distinguished Chair

Adam Birkenheuer, professor of internal medicine at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected for the newly endowed Andy Quattlebaum Distinguished Chair in Infectious Disease Research. Birkenheuer is the second faculty member to receive a distinguished chair at the CVM, joining Natasha Olby, the Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rahna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology and professor of neurology and neurosurgery. These two appointments are among 100 new endowed faculty positions at NC State made possible during the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign.

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation has announced the creation of a Hardship Fund to increase its ongoing support of NC State’s Community College Collaboration program. This grant addendum will assist students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
