Bearded Dragon Offers Insight Into Cancer Treatment

A 6-year-old lizard named Citrus is treated for sarcoma, thanks to a Petco Foundation grant to the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine that helps defray the cost of treating cancer in exotic animals like birds, reptiles and small mammals. Pet owners often decide not to treat an exotic animal because of the expense — which means owners lose pets sooner and veterinary medicine loses valuable opportunities to gain insight into effective treatment.

Alumna Explores the Oil Industry

NC State graduate Lauren Cagley always enjoyed problem-solving and using creativity to make a difference, so discovering her calling in engineering during her undergraduate career as a Park Scholar paved the way for a bright future. At the ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery in Beaumont, Texas, she is currently responsible for managing day-to-day logistics for 375,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

A Continuing Buzz of Excitement

The buzz surrounding NC State alumna Leigh-Kathryn Bonner’s company isn’t dying down. Since her participation in several entrepreneurship programs that enjoy private support and her 2015 graduation, Bonner has grown Bee Downtown to $350,000 in annual revenue. She recently garnered an impressive new recognition, being selected as one of Inc.’s 30 Most Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs under 30.

Alumni Association Honors Students and Faculty

Shelton-Caldwell Fellow Adora Nsonwu is among three students receiving the 2018 Mathews Medal, NC State's highest nonacademic honor for seniors who make significant contributions to the university and create a lasting legacy. At an April 23 event, the Alumni Association honored the students along with 22 top faculty members dedicated to teaching, research and extension, and four faculty inducted into the Research Leadership Academy.

An Extraordinary Gift for an Extraordinary Place

Two NC State industrial engineering alumni are supporting the College of Engineering’s newest facility with the largest gift given for a campus building in the university's history. The college announced the $25 million gift from Edward P. Fitts Jr. and Edgar S. Woolard Jr. on April 20 at the official groundbreaking for what will be named Fitts-Woolard Hall. The $154-million project on Centennial Campus is also funded by the passage of the May 2016 Connect NC bond referendum as well as other private donors.

Time to Give Back

Phyllis and Steven Rea – a College of Engineering graduate and Campaign Cabinet member – are giving back by establishing a named endowment for mechanical engineering collections at NCSU Libraries. The fund will provide resources for students, and particularly those in the College of Engineering, to prepare them for professional life after graduation.

Maloney Awarded Goldwater Scholarship

Madison Maloney, a Park Scholar and an NC State junior majoring in aerospace engineering, has received the prestigious award from The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. She is one of 211 students selected from an applicant pool of 1,280.
