More Than Money

After losing her mother to cancer three days into her freshman year at NC State, Alyssa Bowker found herself thrust into a challenging emotional and financial situation. To honor her mother, and seeded by gifts from their wedding guests, she and her husband created an endowment that they continue to grow to support students facing similar difficulties.

Rodolphe Barrangou Named to National Inventors Hall of Fame

Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in recognition of his inventions, creativity, and spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Barrangou becomes the seventh NC State faculty member to be elected into the hall and will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the organization’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in October.

Johnston Elected Honorary Member of ACI

Edward I. Weisiger Distinguished Professor Emeritus Dr. David Johnston was recently elected Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in recognition of his contributions to the work of ACI and the concrete industry. Honorary Member is the institute’s highest honor.

In December 2022, NC State announced the creation of the Goodnight Doctoral Fellowship to provide funding support for graduate students whose research focuses on STEM or education. Meet the three College of Education students who are part of the inaugural cohort.

Pack Meal Share Program Receives 1,500 Donated Meals for Spring 2023

The Pack Meal Share program was developed in 2018 through collaboration between Student Government, NC State Dining and the Student Ombuds office as a way for students to directly support their peers. Students with a flex meal plan donated a total of 1,500 meals at the end of the fall semester, which will be distributed throughout the spring to students who apply for aid.

Extraordinary Cancer Care for Long-Lived Companion Rusty the Corn Snake

A corn snake probably isn’t the first animal that comes to mind when most people think of getting a long-term pet companion, but Carter Lewis wouldn’t trade the 26 years she had with her Rusty for anything. The Petco Love and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund helped Lewis get the best care possible for her companion.

Hentz Made Chemistry Make Sense

Longtime NC State chemistry professor and inaugural recipient of the Holladay Medal Forrest C. Hentz died in December at the age of 89. The College of Sciences established the Forrest C. Hentz Jr. Scholarship Endowment following his retirement on June 30, 2002, and the family requests all memorials be directed to that or in the planting of a tree or flower in his memory.

Park Enrichment Grants Awarded for Spring 2023

Park Enrichment Grants provide support for Park Scholars engaged in professional and personal enrichment experiences in the United States and abroad. The Park Enrichment Grant Committee made the following awards to Park Scholars who submitted proposals by the November 2022 deadline.

The Derby Lane Greyhound Track Collection Comes to the Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center

Through a lifetime of work, Louise Weaver built and maintained a collection of Derby Lane’s photographs, scrapbooks, racing programs, artifacts and much more. She has now donated this collection to the NC State University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center, where this unparalleled record will become accessible to researchers interested in the history of animals in society and American culture.
