How Do You Honor a Dean? With a CeleBraden

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences took a cue from Dean Jeff Braden in deciding how to celebrate his 13-year legacy of leadership: make it fun, and make it matter. Plant Patch Enables Continuous Monitoring for Crop Diseases

Researchers from NC State have developed a patch that plants can “wear” to continuously monitor for plant diseases or other stresses, such as crop damage or extreme heat. Yong Zhu, co-corresponding author of the paper and Andrew A. Adams Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State, said the prototypes can already detect 13 different plant volatile organic compounds with high accuracy, allowing users to develop a customized sensor array that focuses on the stresses and diseases that a grower thinks are most relevant.
