Peter Martorella Fund Helps Social Studies Educators Develop New Skills

The third cohort of teachers who received funding from the Peter H. Martorella Memorial Award Fund graduated this spring from the College of Education’s New Literacies and Global Learning (NLGL) master’s degree program with a concentration in social studies. Named for a former social studies education professor, the Martorella Fund provides small grants to teachers to help offset the costs of graduate school.

Fewer Cars, More Hand Sanitizer

For creative, problem-solving partners NC State and Novozymes, the coronavirus crisis means working together to mitigate local shortages of hand sanitizer, an important but sometimes hard-to-find product. The partners are no strangers to collaborating; the university recently received from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Novozymes’ parent philanthropic arm, a $27 million grant to enhance biopharmaceutical manufacturing and a $30 million grant to improve crop resilience.

During a visit to the NC State Veterinary Hospital, Kit and Jocky Creasy noticed the Gallop of Honor, which seemed like a wonderful way to memorialize their horse Pegasus, who lived for 41 years. Gifts to the Gallop of Honor recognize beloved horses, friends and veterinarians while helping the College of Veterinary Medicine set and keep pace with advances in equine health.

Memorial Belltower Completion and Restoration Project

The current Memorial Belltower project — set into motion by a transformational gift from Bill (’81) and Frances Henry to the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign in November 2017 — is adding bells and interior stairs that were never installed. CVM Matching Donations to Tracy Hanner Endowed Scholarship

The Tracy Hanner Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 by the North Carolina Association of Minority Veterinarians to honor Tracy Hanner, who became the CVM's first Black graduate in 1986. The scholarship supports underrepresented DVM students at the CVM, with a preference given to students coming from underserved communities, and the college is matching contributions through this month.

‘Don of Donations’ Retires

Over a career spanning six chancellors, eight athletics directors, and 19 Wolfpack football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball coaches, one thing remained constant: Bobby Purcell's passion for NC State and its student-athletes. NC State's Department of Health and Exercise Studies announced that junior Crista Bain has been named the latest recipient of the Isaac Frank Ormond III Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes a strong, consistent commitment to the field of health and exercise studies through participation in extracurricular activities, internships, certifications and other educational opportunities. Recipients demonstrate characteristics such as good character and strong academic standing.

Generational Generosity Supports Agribusiness Breakthroughs

NC State prepared Bill Culpepper for a career in agribusiness when he graduated in 1966, and his family has followed in his footsteps. The Culpeppers recently made a significant gift to NC State and the Plant Sciences Initiative, naming the lobby space of the new Plant Sciences Building slated to open in 2022.
