First Group Participates in College of Education Summer Internship Program in Memory of Chantal Warfield

The College of Education recognizes its first participants in the competitive, eight-week summer internship program established to honor the impact and legacy of Chantal Warfield '19. Amaya Dicker '21, a middle grades English language arts and social studies education major who looked up to Warfield, and Teaching Fellow Breanna Goins '21 were the first students to receive support from the program, which is funded in part through a gift from the John M. Belk Endowment.

Julie Smith ’06 Named to UNC System Executive Leadership Institute

Park Scholarships alumna Julie Smith '06 graduated summa cum laude with the designation of valedictorian from NC State with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in environmental science. Now the assistant vice chancellor for external affairs, partnerships and economic development at NC State, Smith has been selected to participate in the first cohort of the UNC System Executive Leadership Institute.

‘Map’ of Sweet Potato Genome to Improve Breeding Efforts

When it comes to certain aspects of genetics, sweet potatoes are a lot more complicated than humans. But NC State scientists have created complex genetic maps enabling them to untangle which genes are associated with economically important traits such as higher yield and disease resistance. In other words, their genetic maps may lead to better sweet potatoes. Learn more about the research of scholars including Zhao-Bang Zeng, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of horticultural science.

Dunning Honored for Forward-Thinking CVM Leadership

As associate dean for advancement, which includes both the fundraising and communications teams at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Dianne Dunning brings a wealth of knowledge about science, public health and the human-animal bond to her duties. Recently, Susan and Randy Ward honored Dunning with a Coat of Excellence in recognition of "the value she brings to us, to the state and to the health of animals.”

Aligning Strengths to Advance Medicine

The Comparative Medicine Institute is making NC State a destination for innovative research and training in biomedical sciences. The institute encourages interdisciplinary collaborations among more than 200 biomedical sciences-focused researchers in six colleges and 26 academic departments at NC State, as well as researchers from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and N.C. Central University. Co-directors are Joshua Pierce, LORD Corporation Distinguished Scholar in the College of Sciences, and Jorge Piedrahita, Randall B. Terry Jr. Distinguished Professor of Translational Medicine and Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Tracy Hanner, the CVM's first Black graduate, has spent his career pushing for diversity in veterinary medicine. With a new scholarship in his name created by the the North Carolina Association of Minority Veterinarians -- which reached its fundraising goal in a week -- Hanner continues to make a difference for students.

Annual Shelton Leadership Forum Coming Up on Oct. 1

The Shelton Leadership Forum, heading into its 19th year, involves participants from all over North Carolina and surrounding states in a day focused on practical lessons in values-based leadership. This year's theme is Leadership Challenges: The Complexity of Leading Organizations with a Global Mindset. Scheduled keynote speakers include Chuck Robbins, Carla Harris and Anders Sorman-Nilsson.
