New STEM Program to Connect High Schoolers with Geospatial Tech and Careers

The Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State and its partners are launching a program for high school students interested in learning about the benefits of a career in the geospatial sciences and using the latest technologies in this field to solve real-world problems. A grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund helps keep the program free for interested students.

Eighteen students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences participated in the Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Leaders Conference in Kansas City, Missouri – the largest contingent the college has ever sent. Participants were selected from a competitive national pool to receive industry sponsorship, covering their conference fees and lodging.

College of Natural Resources doctoral student Matthew Stillwagon is studying how nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in the soil and water are altered by elevated salinity. The Global Change Fellowship provides training in science communication and networking opportunities that will help him share his research with key stakeholders.

Educator Dubroy to Discuss Xenophobia and Inclusivity

Tashni-Ann Dubroy, who earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from NC State and is currently executive vice president and chief operating officer of Howard University, names affordability and access among the top issues facing higher education. Dubroy is delivering the 2018 Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity Lecture, titled “There Is a Xenophobe Among Us: Diversity and Inclusivity on College Campuses,” at NC State this week.
