Meet the Newest Dean’s Scholars in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences

The college awarded the merit-based scholarship to six outstanding incoming freshmen, who use the funds to offset tuition and for hands-on learning such as study abroad, internships or undergraduate research. Funding comes from donor gifts to the college’s Excellence Fund, in addition to the William T. Kretzer Family Scholarship fund.

Park Scholarships Team Welcomes Reneé Tutchton

As assistant director of external relations, Reneé Tutchton will oversee the Park Scholarships program’s communications and recruiting efforts, and she will also play a major role in the application and selection process. In addition, she will serve as adviser to students who serve on the Park Scholarships Distinguished Speakers committees and oversee the Park Scholars’ Plans of Professional Development.

Zikry receives ASME Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award

Dr. Mohammed Zikry, the Zan Prevost Smith Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State and an international leader in micromechanics modeling, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Courageous Canine Fights Cancer

A generous grant from the Petco Foundation to NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine supports companion animal cancer treatment for animals like Rocky, a 6-year-old Bullmastiff - helping pet owners afford treatments for their beloved companions while helping clinicians learn from increased experience managing different kinds of cancer cases.

Celebrating the Plant Sciences Partnership

Many agricultural leaders planted their stakes, literally, in the ground on NC State’s Centennial Campus recently to mark commitments made to the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative. Gathering at the site where NC State will build a hub for the initiative, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences administrators and Chancellor Randy Woodson thanked the 44 groups that have contributed funds and insight to help launch the project.

Answering the Call

Since he left NC State in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, Frank Culberson has answered many calls from his alma mater for help. He and his wife, Doris, have donated to the College of Engineering to fund scholarships and named professorships, and he has served in key volunteer roles. Now, the Culbersons are supporting the construction of Engineering Building Oval, and the atrium in Engineering Building I, site of Culberson’s home Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE), has been dedicated in their honor.
