Armfield Foundation Invests in Pioneer Scholars Program

The Edward M. Armfield Sr. Foundation, based in Greensboro, recently committed $500,000 to the Pioneer Scholarship program at Wilson College of Textiles. The scholarship supports students in North Carolina’s underresourced rural communities, and the first cohort of five Pioneer Scholars matriculates this fall.

Receiving the Textile Military Scholarship didn’t just enhance Garrett Welsh’s NC State experience — it served as a vote of a confidence in his abilities and confirmation that his work in the classroom and as a member of the Naval ROTC hadn’t gone unnoticed. A STEP Above: Young Alumna Cassia Lewis ’13

Through participating in the Summer Textile Exploration Program (STEP), a residential program for rising high school seniors, second-generation Wilson College of Textiles alumna Cassia Lewis '13 became eligible for — and received — a full-ride, Duke Kimbrell (Parkdale)-sponsored Erlanger Merit scholarship. She now lives on the West Coast, serving as director of business development for fabric manufacturer Swisstex Direct.
