Providing for the Pack

NC State continues making strides to combat food insecurity on campus, from the growing PACK Meal Share program to the addition of meal kits in the Feed the Pack Food Pantry. The efforts dovetail with the collaborative efforts of partners including the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and NC State Dining to create Pack Essentials, a means for meeting students’ needs for housing, food and financial services.

Spotlight on Our Students: So You’re Digging for Dinosaurs?

Erin Gniewek, a rising third-year University Scholar from Advance, is spending the summer working with Makounta-Voules Archaeological Project. The project is based outside of Polis, Cyprus, and established by NC State professors Kate Grossman and Tate Paulette.

Andrews Launch Accelerator Helps Put WAAM Founder on Track for Fall Launch

Karly Pavlinac, a 2017 NC State graduate, is turning frustration with step-by-step fitness instructions into a startup. WAAM, or We Are A Movement, offers top fitness trainers a toolbox for monetizing their fan base, along with a community. Pavlinac met a key investor during her participation in the 2018 Andrews Launch Accelerator, a program supported by Poole College of Management alumnus Chip Andrews and his wife Lyn.

AGI Grad Named Pig Farmer of Tomorrow

Supported in part by private giving, NC State's Agricultural Institute offers two-year degrees that prepare graduates to work in agriculture. Bailee Arnold is an AGI alum, and she's now managing a 4,000-head sow farm at Maxwell Foods in Goldsboro. Arnold, recently named a 2019 Pig Farmer of Tomorrow, jokes that AGI helped "hog tie" her brain with regard to agricultural work.

Keeping Time with Zeevy

Zeevy is an 11-year-old rescue dog who has been described as a "lifesaver" by his owner Sharon Davis because of the companionship he has offered in the wake of Davis' traumatic brain injury. When Zeevy faced a malignant tumor, his owner brought him to NC State Veterinary Hospital, where support from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund helped defray the cost of treatment.

Business Icon Wordsworth Supports NC State Veterinary Medicine

Influential businessman and NC State alumnus Jerry Wordsworth has made a substantial, unrestricted gift to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Wordsworth, who recently brought his dog Rover to CVM for extraordinary care, hopes his gift will inspire others to join him in supporting North Carolina's educational institutions.

NC State Hosts Conference for Military-Affiliated Students and Veterans

As a regional site for the Student Transition Resource Initiative for Veteran's Education (STRIVE) conference, NC State recently served 378 participants, a total nearly equaling last year’s attendance for all four regions. The university continues to strengthen its community of military-affiliated and veteran students through the Military and Veterans Services Center. Private support, like that from NC State University Foundation Board member Jeff Wright, is helping the center become self-sustaining.

Crop Resilience Is Focus of New Interdisciplinary Research

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has announced the funding of the Collaborative Crop Resilience Project, a $30 million collaborative project between NC State and three Danish institutions. The goal: to harness microbes in ways that make crops more resilient against environmental stresses while reducing the need for chemical treatments and irrigation. The study will focus on wheat.

2018 Andrews Launch Accelerator’s Aeva Labs is Taking Off

Andrews Launch Accelerator participants founded Aeva Labs in 2018, aiming to find a way to help distillers accelerate the production of liquor. A year after the launch, the company is taking off. A gift from NC State alumnus Chip Andrews and his wife Lyn established the NC State Acceleration Fund in 2016. Awards support student startup companies.

Extraordinary Care, Extraordinary Appreciation

The extraordinary emergency care their horse Max received, as well as the cutting-edge work of the Intestinal Regenerative Medicine laboratory of assistant professor Liara Gonzales, inspired Mike and Mary Jo Matthies to make a bequest supporting equine research and equine medicine scholarships at NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine.
