Record-Setting Class of AAAS Fellows Named

Ten faculty members, including several who hold endowed positions, have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. This is the largest class of fellows elected to this prestigious group from NC State since the university was founded in 1887, signaling a rising reputation as a research powerhouse.

Ligler Receives Leadership Award from National Academy of Engineering

Frances S. Ligler, Ross Lampe Distinguished Professor in the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, has received the Simon Ramo Founders Award from the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Ligler, a member of NAE since 2005, is being recognized “for the invention and development of portable optical biosensors, service to the nation and profession and educating the next, more diverse generation of engineers."

Proactive Steps Linked to Reduced Medical Costs, Hospital Visits for Children With Asthma

A new study looking at data from tens of thousands of children with asthma finds that several widely available interventions are associated with reduced medical costs and a reduced likelihood that the children will need to visit an emergency room or stay in the hospital. Julie Swann, lead author of the study, is the department head and A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor of the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State.

NC State Statistician Dickey Named Clarivate Citation Laureate

David Dickey, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics at NC State, has been named a 2020 Citation Laureate by Clarivate Web of Science. The award honors researchers whose work and influence “is comparable to that of past and future Nobel Prize recipients.” Dickey, who helped create the widely used Dickey-Fuller Test in 1979, is an award-winning statistician and a founding member of NC State’s Institute for Advanced Analytics.

Grant Continues Support of Crop DNA Replication Research

Two NC State professors recently received a three-year, $3.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to continue their work of 17 years unraveling how plants control DNA replication and how this influences agronomic traits. Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the lead investigator on the grant. Bill Thompson, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, is the co-investigator.

2020 Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professors Named

Sarah J. Carrier, Elizabeth C. Dickey, Ryan E. Emanuel and Jorge A. Piedrahita were recently recognized by the NC State Alumni Association for their outstanding graduate-level teaching. Each of them received a $4,000 award as part of the honor.

Khan and Dickey Honored for Their Research Achievements

Saad Khan and Michael Dickey of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering recently received important honors for their research achievements. Khan is the INVISTA Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and director of the CBE graduate program. Dickey is the Alcoa Professor and a University Faculty Scholar who has done extensive work mentoring students.

Moving Out, Moving In, Moving Forward

Learn more about the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering's move into Centennial Campus' newest building, Fitts-Woolard Hall. One of the first areas to be shifted in August was the Construction, Materials and Mechanics Laboratory, usually referred to simply as Mann 100. David Johnston, Edward I. Weisiger Distinguished Professor Emeritus, has been overseeing the move.

Of particular note are the effects that insects will have on agriculture here and abroad, as increasing carbon dioxide levels and unusual weather patterns will cause some species to thrive and others to go extinct.

Chemistry Researchers Receive $3.3M as Part of New Solar Energy Center

Felix (Phil) Castellano and three other NC State researchers are part of a team that recently received U.S. Department of Energy funding to establish a research center to advance artificial photosynthesis for the production of fuels from sunlight. The team, which includes investigators at six institutions, will use the $3.3 million to be received over five years for their work with the Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels (CHASE). Castellano is a professor of chemistry and Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Chair.
