Claire Mellott ’20 Volunteers with AmeriCorps VISTA

Having developed an interest in public health from participating in the Park Scholarships Speaker Series, Claire Mellott '20 discovered the Rural Works! program and its partnership with NC State. Focused on addressing public health issues in local areas, Rural Works! provided Mellott with the opportunity to learn more about opioid misuse while serving in Asheville.

Class of 2020 to Present William C. Friday Award to Maggie Kane

The Park Scholarships Class of 2020 will present the 21st annual William C. Friday Award to NC State graduate Maggie Kane. Established in 2000, the award is given to individuals who carry on Friday's dedication to leadership, scholarship, service and character. Kane, founder of A Place at the Table, a pay-what-you-can cafe that provides community as well as healthy meal options, was selected for her commitment to Raleigh, fighting hunger and combating the stigma of homelessness.

Jada Hester ’20 Looks at the Wage Gap as a WomenNC Scholar

Jada Hester, a member of the Park Scholarships class of 2020, was named one of 10 WomenNC Scholars from across the state. As part of the program, Hester, who is majoring in business administration and international studies, conducted research focused on the wage gap among women in Durham — specifically, the disparity between pay for white and nonwhite women.

Park Scholars Host Nicole Lurie for Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society

NC State's Park Scholarships Classes of 2020 and 2021 will host the second Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society, featuring internationally-renowned health services researcher and health policy expert Dr. Nicole Lurie. The lecture, “Reaching the other side: lessons from the intersection of medicine and policy,” will take place Monday, Sept. 23, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in James B. Hunt Jr. Library's Duke Energy Hall and will be followed by a reception. Both are free and open to the public.
