Personal Statement: Stephen Louis

This fall, wide receiver Stephen Louis will wear the the NC State football team's No. 1 jersey – an annual honor bestowed by head coach Dave Doeren in recognition of qualities like leadership, hard work and being an extraordinary teammate. Louis, who earned his bachelor's degree in parks, recreation and tourism management from the College of Natural Resources and is now a graduate student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' youth development and leadership program, shares his story of growing up in Florida on the way to becoming a Wolfpack scholarship student-athlete.

Wolfpack Athletics Program on the Rise

With private donors as an important part of its team, the NC State athletics department ended a historic 2017-18 year by placing 15th in the nation in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings – reaching its organizational goal of Top 25 status for the first time in the program that measures all-around sports excellence. Student-athletes continue to improve their academic performance as well.

A three-time All-Star during an 18-year career in Major League Baseball, Dan Plesac ’84 originally planned to play basketball at NC State before coaches transferred his scholarship.

Crossing Paths

When NC State offered then-high school student Erika Kemp an athletics scholarship, she had never run cross country. Now, she's a six-time All-America honoree, across both indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country competition. A student in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, she's also a five-time member of the ACC’s All-Academic team.

NC State cornerback Nicholas Lacy's experiences playing football led him to an interest in human biology. The May graduate from the College of Sciences -- and former walk-on who earned an athletics scholarship -- will further his studies in Baltimore this summer through an internship at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
